Super Natural Sustainability Stories

Sustainability

LUUM - it's all in the name.

LUUM creates sustainable woven products combining age-old weaving techniques, represented by the traditional loom, with new technologies, expressed in the modern spelling of ”LUUM,” to construct textiles that perform in the collaborative spaces of today. Making an impression without leaving a footprint.

Super Natural Collection

The Super Natural Collection comprises five sustainable and super-natural textiles by Suzanne Tick that honor nature’s inherent character. Emphasizing the use of natural and inherently biodegradable fibers wherever possible, waste is removed from the landfill. We engage renewable, domestic, recycled, biodegradable and circular fiber systems, taking inspiration from the ultimate source: nature. This creates new avenues for textiles that are conscious of their mark on the environment. By working with the expanding and unfolding of nature’s organizing powers, we take part of its system, presenting a collection that feels good and does good, too.

Biodegradable Multipurpose Textiles

Biotope, Ecotone and Grid State offer acoustical support to spaces that require wrapped walls, panels and screens. Utilizing 100% recycled, biodegradable polyester fiber technology, they provide sustainable design solutions with their bleach-cleanable and multipurpose-use properties. In spaces where architecture amplifies noise, our biodegradable, acoustically transparent textiles afford greater flexibility in manipulating the office soundscape—providing newfound moments for quiet and clarity.

Dispersion + Gaze Draperies

Gaze, and Dispersion explore the opportunity to soften space with textiles through a layered installation. Inspired by Sol LeWitt Wall Drawings, Dispersion features a dissolving grid pattern with an open and ephemeral structure. The pattern gradates from dense to open, transforming the rigidity of the grid into an organic drapery. Behind Dispersion is Gaze, a soft, billowy and reversible drapery sheer that combines clever color play with renewable fibers, bringing soothing dimensionality in a 126" wide format.

Newknit + Backdrop Draperies

Backdrop supports Newknit in this classic layered drapery installation, providing a dry, wool-like hand with a cross-dye polyester yarn composition. Backdrop’s heathered weave attains its structural two-color effect through the interaction of its warp and weft, picking up colors from Newknit to create a holistic design scheme. Inspired by the structure of the architectural grid, Newknit’s two-color, wool-like open weave warp knit construction maintains a graphic strength across the plane, creating conversation between the two materials.

Newknit + Gaze Draperies

Gaze and Newknit explore the relationship between open weave and sheer drapery constructions. Installed behind Newknit, Gaze’s billowy nature and reversible color combinations utilizes wool on one side and polyester on the other to lend a sculptural effect in a 126" wide format. Newknit’s two-color, wool-like warp knit construction layers over Gaze, referencing architectural grids by maintaining a graphic strength across the plane. Together, the two draperies lend a structural aesthetic to variety of workspaces.

North American Wool

Wool is rapidly renewable, biodegradable, inherently stain resistant and fire retardant. In additon, it also soft, breathable and appropriate for all climates. The wool in Rubric, Barberpole Basket, Mitered and Equilux is sourced, dyed and spun using North American sheep’s wool, which can contribute to LEED points.

Recycled Garment Waste

Everyday Boucle, Wool Fleck, Melange Check, and Graph Speck are textiles made of 100% recycled wool, polyester and acrylic textile waste that would otherwise go to landfill. Learn how these textiles are made repurposed from discarded garments and post industrial apparel waste into contract textiles in ten steps.

100% Recycled Biodegradable Polyester

55 million pounds of synthetic plastic textiles are sent to the landfill each day in the US. We’re reducing the carbon footprint by using innovative biodegradable synthetic fibers made from 100% post-consumer recycled waste. Biotope, Ecotone and Grid State’s recycled, biodegradable fiber content lessen impact on the environment and provide more design solutions with their bleach-cleanable and multipurpose-use properties. See how these materials break down.

Recycled Direct Glue Wallcovering

55% of the Luum collection contains recycled polyester, which derives from plastic bottles. Wallcoverings are a powerful design tool that can make a feeling in a space. Based on sheen and texture levels, you can create an essence in a room that buffers or amplifies light and sound through sensory perception. Direct Glue Wallcoverings like Dhurga, Soft Ridge, Impression, Twining and Rhetoric have a balance of matte and shiny elements, bringing energy and tactility into a space using a combination of recycled polyester fibers.
