Garment Waste Platform

Join us in a solution.

Garment waste is one of the fastest growing forms of pollution worldwide. In fact, every day in the US alone, more than 55 million pounds of textile waste enters the landfill.

Since introducing our award-winning Garment Waste Platform designed by Suzanne Tick in 2020, the offering has grown to seven current styles. Hand in hand with a woman-owned mill, the Platform supports the world’s largest recycling district, and the talented artisans who carry on a century old tradition of blending reclaimed fibers from wool, polyester and acrylic garments into masterfully colored textiles.

From stripes like Forward Motion, to plaids like Melange Check and solids like Stability, every style is free of PFAS stain repellents, FR chemicals, antimicrobials and other added chemical treatments, making this platform a powerful toolkit for sustainable design.

Luum's Garment Waste Process

01

First, our partners receive bales of discarded clothing and industrial textile waste.

02

Then, they sort the clothing by color and content before shredding it to the fiber level.

03

Artisans use custom formulas to mix colors together, resulting in new yarn shades.

04

The next step is to mix the yarn color formulas in large batches at the mill.

05

Once well mixed, the fibers are twisted into yarns.

06

From there, Luum Creative uses the melange yarns to develop color blankets.

07

Then, the mill weaves the color blankets and Luum Creative reviews the colors.

08

Finally, Luum Creative selects the final colorways and sends them to full scale production.
